Vondrell McGee - High School Highlights Video - Longhorns Class of 2006

At 5'10", running back Vondrell McGee might not have lots of size but he more than makes up for it in good. During his last two years on a great Longview HS football team, he rushed for 3400 yards with 9.34 yards per carry. He received several MVP and all-everything awards. But what's most impressive is that he seems to have a knack for the big play at crucial moments.

Just ask Tyler's Robert E. Lee HS.
Take a look at these spectacular highlights and his performances against Tyler.

Junior and senior year highlights.

Two plays against Tyler Lee in 2004. The 1st tied the game, the 2nd won it.

In Focus: The 2006 Rose Bowl

Fox Sports Net's new series, In Focus, uses classic photographs to illustrate its stories of famous teams, fierce rivalries and memorable moments in sports.

This is a nice look at the 2006 Rose Bowl narrated by interviews with players, photographers and journalists. It's a great way to relive the game and it also happens to be about that time in the summer when it's most appreciated.

This is a complete episode, so I'd watch it quick while it's still there.

Ramonce Taylor Transfers from Texas but Leaves Highlights Behind

Ramonce Taylor has confirmed his decision to transfer from the Texas football team reportedly to Texas College in Tyler, Texas.
He's was suspended from the team in January for academic issues and was later arrested after police found four pounds of pot in his truck. Taylor's lawyer says that the drugs belonged to another passenger, but neither of Taylor's 'friends' are jumping up to claim the stash.
"I want to thank my teammates who supported me through these struggles," Taylor said in the statement. "I will be supporting all of them as they go for back-to-back national championships. They will always have a special place in my heart. I also need to thank Coach Brown for always being honest and never changing. He always treated me as a person and not just a football player. I'll always respect him for that."
Here are my favorite highlights from Taylor's short career as a Texas Longhorn.

Cat Osterman won an ESPY for Best Female College Athlete while Vince Young won for Best Championship Performance and also accepted an award with Matt Leinart for Best Game. There were other Texas Longhorn related nominations at the 2006 ESPYs and this clip has every bit that made the telecast including the complete Vince Young award segments.
It shows Nathan Vasher, Lance Armstrong and Will Ferrell who it seems has still not recovered from the heartbreak of the Rose Bowl.

Ahmard Hall joins the Tennessee Titans. And Vince Young and Bo Scaife and Sloan Thomas - Interview Video

Ahmard Hall served four years in the U.S. Marines, with stints in Afghanistan and Kosovo, before walking on to the Texas Longhorns football team. He was ineligible for the regular NFL Draft, but the former UT fullback recently signed a two-year deal to play with the Tennessee Titans. The deal makes Hall the fourth former Longhorn currently on the Titans team, joining Vince Young, Bo Scaife and Sloan Thomas.
"(Tennessee) told me I would be competing for the job," Hall said. "They know what kind of guy I am so they are expecting me to come in and work hard. Everyone around me is excited, but I know I still have a lot to accomplish."
This report from Austin's KXAN features a brief interview with Hall.

DKR War Memorial Stadium Decommissioning Ceremony - Frank Denius Interview

Members of the Veterans committee for the Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial football stadium held a brief military decommissioning ceremony for the memorial in the north endzone. The plaques were removed and will be stored until a re-commissioning ceremony, when reconstruction is complete in 2008. When all is said and done, the stadium expansion will feature a veteran's plaza.
Frank Denius, a UT benefactor and Veterans' Stadium Committee chairman, presided over the ceremony. Denius landed on Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion in World War II and was awarded four silver stars for his ridiculously distinguished service in the US Army.

This News 8 Austin clip shows the decommissioning ceremony and features an interview with Denius who got a national championship for his 80th birthday on January 4, 2006.

Vince Young and Cat Osterman: Big 12 Athletes of the Year - ESPY Commercial

Vince Young and Cat Osterman have been named the Big XII Players of the Year. Vince Young led the Texas football team to a last minute victory in the Rose Bowl and became the first player to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. Cat Osterman had a 38-4 record for the season with a 0.42 ERA. She pitched 36 complete games with 28 shutouts, 5 no-hitters, 11 one-hitters, 12 two-hitters and also set a CWS record with 18 strikeouts in a single game.

So it's not too surprising that Cat and Vince were also nominated for the same award at the 2006 ESPYS. Cat won an award for best female college athlete, Young won for best championship performance, and UT's victory over USC in the Rose Bowl was named best game.

Here's one of ESPN's promos for the show about Vince Young in the Rose Bowl.

LaMarcus Aldridge on The Best Damn Sports Show - Complete Interview Video

LaMarcus Aldridge and his new Portland Trailblazers teammate, Brandon Roy appeared on The Best Damn Sports Show just after they were selected early in the first round of the 2006 NBA Draft. They cover the usual "wow, you're a millionaire/welcome to the NBA" questions, but mostly this is all about John Salley and the things he says about himself. So if you're vaguely interested in the #2 draft pick out of Texas and very interested in knowing more about John Salley, this clip is for you.

Vince on his throwing style: "There are a lot of different quarterbacks doing a lot of different things. What ever it takes to get that ball to that guy, in his hands at the right time, that's what I'm going to do."

Eating Hot Dogs is a Sport? The 2006 Nathan's Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest

I'm not positive, but I've always thought the 'S' in ESPN stands for 'sports'. Regardless, ESPN actually televised yesterday's annual Forth of July Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest in it's entirety. I was also starting to think that the 'P' stood for 'poker', but after this display I'm pretty sure it stands for 'puke'.

If you're able to watch this entire 'event' without gagging at least once, you may have what it takes to shove twelve pounds of food down your throat and become a 'sports hero' too.

"Training and discipline exemplified."

God Bless America, Roy Williams is good! - Lions and Longhorns Highlight Videos

Roy Williams started 42 games for the Longhorns from 2000 through 2003. He holds Texas career records for receptions (241), receiving yards (3,866, 16.0 average) , TD receptions (36) and 100-yard receiving games (16). He was the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year. And was ranked first nationally among true freshman wide receivers in receiving yards, yards per game (73.5), yards per catch and touchdowns.

He was the 7th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and he's doing okay in Detroit too. This clip shows some of the most impressive highlights from his time with the Horns and then even more jaw-dropping plays from his first two years with the Detroit Lions.

This is a ridiculous catch in mini-camp (last catch on the above clip) and Detroit coach Steve Mariucci giddy and silly over having Roy Williams on his team.
